The Tremendous Growth of Amway India to 39% in North East
Kohima, November 3 (MExN): Amway India Enterprises Pvt. Ltd has registered a 39 % growth in the Northeast in the first nine months of the fiscal year 2009. Amway India recorded a sales-turnover of Rs. 55.1 crore in northeast during 2008 and Nagaland at Rs. 7.43 crore during 2008. Amway India also paid taxes to the tune of Rs. 6. 34 crore in Northeast in 2008 and to the state exchequer of Nagaland, Rs. 8.9 lakh.
“Northeast, contributing a sizeable chunk of our turnover for eastern India, has witnessed 39% growth in sales during January to September 2009 over the corresponding period last year,” said Diptarag Bhattacharjee, vice president, Eastern region, Amway India during a press conference here.
“To further drive the business, we are intensifying our focus on the productivity, expansion and extensive training of our distributors in northeast including state like Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura,” he said. There are 45,000 Amway distributors in the northeast, of which Nagaland has 5300 distributors. Amway India has ten offices in northeast and two offices in Nagaland at Kohima and Dimapur. It has conducted around 200 training sessions in the last nine months in Nagaland to boost sales.
“Nagaland is one of the upcoming growth-potential regions of Northeast. It is growing in terms of distributor bases and sales,” Bhattacharjee said. Keeping in mind the huge growth potential of Nagaland as well as northeast, Amway is intensifying its focus on Nagaland and other states in northeast, he said. Amway paid taxes to the tune of Rs. 8.9 lakh to the state exchequer of Nagaland in 2008.
Under Project Sunrise, Amway has set up vocation centre in Ebenezer Orphanage at Dimapur and effort was also on to introduce a similar project for an orphanage home in Kohima also. According to the annual survey by Indian Direct Selling Association, released in the last week of October 2009, the eastern region shows the highest potential for future growth propelled by a rise in entrepreneurial activity. The survey echoes the potential of health, household and personal care as the predominant categories in the region.
Amway India as a market leader in nutrition and wellness category, witnessed growth in Nagaland and northeast. “I believe Nagaland has a huge potential in terms of growth as Amway accords to the people of Nagaland huge income generating opportunity,” added Bhattacharjee.
Rajat Banerje, head, corporate communications, Amway India Enterprises Pvt. Ltd said having touched Rs. 1128 crore nationally in 2009, Amway India is confident of grossing over Rs. 1400 crore in 2009. The company also aims to reach 2500 crore turn over by 2012.
Amway India currently offers 110 products in five categories of personal care, home care, nutrition & wellness, cosmetics and great value products, Banerje said. Amway India is country’s leading direct selling FMCG Company which is a subsidiary of US $ 8.2 billion Amway Corporation, Ada, Michigan, and USA, one of the largest Direct Selling Companies in the world.
The company has invested more than Rs. 151 crore in India. Amway has over 130 offices and 55 city warehouses across the country and covers over 4000 cities and towns through its distribution and home delivery network set up with the support of independent logistic partners.
The company has provided income generating opportunities to over 5 lakh active independent Amway business owners. Amway India has 450 full time employees and has generated indirect employment for 1, 650 persons at all the contract manufacture locations.

Amway Global news-Amway Australia & New Zealand launch Amway University
Amway Australia & New Zealand launch Amway University
Back in 2007, Amway Global (ater become Quixtar) launched Quixtar University. I’m not sure which other markets have done similar, but Amway Australia and New Zealand this month launched e-Learning courses on Amway University. To quote the site -
Amway Learning is a structured approach designed to help you build your knowledge in areas relevant to today’s market place. You may choose to undertake a selected number of business & product subjects and achieve a certificate to reaffirm your knowledge, or for your own personal interest and information.
One of the strengths and at same times weaknesses of the network marketing model is that at any given time a large number, indeed perhaps a majority, of people representing a company such as Amway are actually new and inexperienced. The end result of this is it’s very easy for them to do or say the wrong thing. It’s been my suggestion for sometime that Amway should implement a certification program, and that only ABOs who have undertaken some basic training are allowed to “show the plan” and sponsor people. Until then if they want to expand their networks they have to be accompanied by a certified upline.
Amway hasn’t gone that far yet, but with this new e-Learning course, ABOs will actually receive an official Amway Certificate. Level 1 is called Amway Foundations Certificate and comprises seven separate courses -
1. Welcome to Amway
2. Health & Wellness
3. Home Care
4. Body & Beauty
5. Home Technology
6. Business Fundamentals
7. Making Money Through Retail
A level 2 certificate, Amway Business Builder Certificate, is due to launch later in 2009 and covers business building techniques, and more indepth knowledge of the Amway Sales & Marketing Plan and the Health & Beauty areas.
This is a welcome development, though it’s going to be interesting to see how “business building techniques” is implemented, as currently it’s common for different Amway groups to have different “business building techniques”.
